The road sign at Stirling Point marks the beginning (and end) of State Highway One which travels the length of New Zealand.Tautuku Bay is located in the Catlins, south of Papatowai.  This stunning view is seen easily from Florence Hill lookout.The beautiful Purakaunui Falls are located in the Catlins, south of Owaka.  The tirered waterfall is said to be one of the most photographed in New Zealand.The Bluff Oysters Festival is held in May. It has a great selection of fresh seafood and oysters on offer along with local beers and wines.
The Burt Munro Challenge is held every November in Southland, The event celebrates the life and achievements of Burt Munro.  In 1967 Burt set the world motorcycle record for the under-1000cc, which he set at 183.586 mph (295.453 km/h), at Bonneville, USA.  Burt was portrayed in the movie The World's Fastest Indian, and his character was played by Sir Anthony Hopkins.

The Street Racing event is held in Wyndham, on the last day of the event.McLeans Falls is located in the Catlins, and the waterfall is a short 20 minute walk from the car park through lush native bush and is well worth the walk.The Trooper Memorial statue was erected after the Boer War to remember the fallen soldiers.  The statue stands tall on the intersection of Tay and Dee Streets, Invercargill two main streets.Today Stewart Island is more commonly known as Rakiura, the Land of the Glowing Sky.  This refers to the glowing sunrises, sunsets and the Aurora Australis or Southern Lights which can be seen from the clear skies over Stewart Island.
